It is located in the northwestern part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, in the central region of India. It lies along the slopes of a sandstone ridge, which is a part of the
Malwa plateau and is located at an altitude of 523m. It is to the west of Jabalpur and to the east of Ujjain, the other two major cities of Madhya Pradesh.
It is 744 km south of Delhi and 779 Km northwest of Mumbai (Bombay). There are two man-made lakes at the center of the city plus lot of other small lakes and that is the reason why it is also known as "The city of Lakes"

History Of Bhopal
History of Bhopal goes way back to the 11th Century , founded by King Bhojpal, the present city was established by an Afghan soldier, Dost Mohammed (mid 40's of the 17th Century. He escaped from Delhi after Aurangzeb's death. The city was capital of the former princely state of Bhopal founded in 1723, which became allied to Britain in 1817. It was merged with Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
The two lakes of Bhopal rule the city, and are its focus points. The urban Bhopal today has a multi-faceted profile; On one side it has the old city with its market places,old mosques and palaces and other palacial houses which still reminds of its imperial rulers, followed by the powerful Begums who ruled Bhopal from 1819 to 1926. In contrast the new city is impressesive with its luxurios, exquisitely laid out parks and gardens, broad avenues.
